Newcastle United crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 fourth-round defeat at Everton, as James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry punished a succession of defensive mistakes.
Dan Burn scored a late consolation, but Newcastle’s hopes of reaching a fifth consecutive quarter-final disappeared, and the Magpies’ season is effectively over in terms of earning silverware, and likely clinching a European-bound position in the Premier League given the rebuilding status of the team.
Matthias Jaissle’s side began well on Thursday and controlled much of the opening 20 minutes. Nico Gonzalez picked out Harvey Barnes with a deep cross, forcing Jordan Pickford into a save, while Barnes later broke into the area and created a clear opening for Jacob Ramsey, whose effort was superbly blocked by Vitalii Mykolenko.
However, the momentum shifted in the 34th minute. Amar Dedic committed a silly mistake when pressured by Tyrique George near the sideline, losing possession and allowing Hackney to collect a loose ball and to find Garner unmarked. The midfielder swept a finish beyond Lukas Hornicek.
Everton doubled its lead just before halftime from another Newcastle attack. Pickford gathered Barnes’ effort and immediately released Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on the counter. Ramsey brought him down from behind, but advantage allowed Barry to continue before crossing for Hackney, who escaped his marker and volleyed home from close range.
Jaissle responded with three halftime changes, introducing heavyweights Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa for Ramsey, Barnes and Will Osula. Newcastle was good to generate some pressure and test Pickford, but the finishing remained too little dangerous, and Wissa sent one promising opportunity badly wide.
Everton killed the tie in the 69th minute. Garner intercepted Dedic’s pass and released Dewsbury-Hall behind Newcastle’s defense, allowing the midfielder to square for Barry, who controlled and finished past Hornicek.
Burn finally broke Everton’s resistance too late, in the 89th minute, heading in Joe Willock’s cross before a confrontation involving the goalscorer, Joelinton, Pickford and James Tarkowski produced four bookings to put a cap on the night.
“This is what is shocking and is frustrating as well and therefore probably also I need to scream more,” Jaissle said. “You need to avoid these mistakes. Again, be more mature, more clinical in these situations.”
The defeat ended Newcastle’s Carabao Cup campaign, removed all title chances from its horizon, exposed the contrast between chance creation and execution, and brought Jaissle back to his ever-heating seat with more than half the season yet to be played out.
Making things worse? Everton travels to St James’ Park for a Premier League meeting on Monday.
