Matt Olson had himself a fantastic season as an individual in 2025. His all-around excellence led to him being arguably the best first baseman in all of baseball in 2025 and now the hardware is starting to roll in for Olson. He’s already been named as a nominee for the All-MLB team and is also a finalist for the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger at first base, as well.
If he wasn’t the easy favorite to win the NL Gold Glove Award at first base, he is now after Sports Info Solutions released their
annual Fielding Bible Awards earlier today. Unlike the Gold Gloves, SIS hands out the Fielding Bible Awards on a baseball-wide basis, meaning that they have decided that Matt Olson is the best defensive first baseman in baseball for the 2025 season.
As the post above explains, Olson is no stranger to being recognized for his efforts with the glove. This is now the fifth time that he’s won the Fielding Bible Award and assuming he can continue to be extremely durable and reliable out there, I’d wager that he’ll eventually surpass Albert Pujols and pick up a sixth Fielding Bible Award at some point in the future.
In addition to leading all first basemen in DRS with a whopping 17 (which was good for a tie for fifth place among all defenders in baseball), Olson was the NL leader among first basemen in OAA (9, trailing only Ty France for the overall lead at 10) and he led all first basemen in baseball with a Fielding Run Value of 8 (again, Ty France was in the neighborhood in second place at 7).
Again, Olson was already the prohibitive favorite to win the NL Gold Glove at first base this season and after racking up yet another Fielding Bible Award, I’d say that he’s nearly a shoo-in to add another Gold Glove to his trophy cabinet as well. The jury’s still out on whether he’ll get the Silver Slugger or the All-MLB nod but for now, Olson certainly has a case for being the undisputed best defensive first baseman in all of baseball at the moment.
