Serge Gnabry continued his strong start to the season in Bayern Munich’s 5-0 routing of Hamburg SV at the Allianz Arena in the first Bundesliga match back after the international break, where Gnabry also scored for the German national team in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Northern Ireland. With his goal against Hamburg, which was the first of the five Bayern scored in that match, he now has three goals and three assists from a total of seven appearances across all competitions between club
and country — a rather impressive tally for a player that has really struggled with consistency during his Bayern career.
More than once in season’s and transfer window’s past, Gnabry has been the subject of discussion for potentially being sold by the club, but the front office and supervisory board have decided against doing so at every chance and he has popped up with key runs of form towards the closing stages of seasons after having an otherwise less-than-average season all along. Keeping him or selling him can easily churn up a great deal of debate amongst Bayern fans and pundits alike and a lot of the time, the answers really do depend on if he’s fully fit, what his current form looks like, and what his current market value is.
After the big win over Hamburg SV, board member for sport Max Eberl hinted that the club might be getting ready to sit down and have contract extension discussions with Gnabry at some point. It’s only been a handful of matches thus far, but Gnabry’s form so far cannot be ignored, especially since it’s making up for the fact that Bayern is still without Jamal Musiala until November. “Serge is an extremely important player for us right now. He’s having exceptional games centrally, where he can showcase his cleverness even more. I’ll try to see behind closed doors how and when we’ll have talks,” Eberl explained to Ransport and Spox’s Martin Volkmar (via @iMiaSanMia).
Right now, Gnabry’s contract at Bayern runs through June 2026, so the club is heading into a crucial period in terms of figuring out his future. Presumably, Eberl and the front office would want to try to make a decision before the January transfer window, when Gnabry could then technically sign a pre-contract to join a club come the end of the season on a free transfer if no extension is agreed upon prior. As per transfermarkt, his current market value is 22 million euros, but interested clubs will certainly keep tabs on his situation, knowing he could potentially become a free agent and thus, a free transfer in June.

The Bavarians took home a 5-0 victory in a game that was never close. Bayern Munich was dominant from the outset and wasted little time in giving Hamburg a not so friendly welcome back to Germany’s top flight.
