Arsenal host Everton at the Emirates, looking to temporarily extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table and heap a little bit more pressure on Manchester City. The Gunners are seven points ahead of Manchester City, albeit having played an additional game. The Toffees are, perhaps surprisingly, on the edges of the European conversation, five points behind Chelsea and Liverpool, who are tied for 5th. That’s how the stretch run often goes in the Premier League — fine margins decided on tiring
legs.
Everton have been among the best teams in the PL away from home this season. They are tied for third on away points won and tied for second on points-per-game. On the other hand, Arsenal have won 9 and drawn 2 of the last 11 against Everton at the Emirates, are unbeaten in six consecutive games against the Toffees, and have kept four clean sheets in those matches. On the other, other hand, despite scoring just three goals in the last seven against Arsenal, Everton have taken five points from those matches.
David Moyes’ side have the lowest percentage of possession away from home (39.3%) of any team in the Premier League. When you spend so much of the match without the ball, you tend to concede a bunch of corner kicks and set pieces. At first glance, that would seem a poor tendency against set piece masters Arsenal. But it’ll be strength against strength at the Emirates. Everton are the only team in the PL yet to concede an away goal from a set piece. The reverse is true, too. The Toffees are strong on attacking set pieces, particularly with 6’6 Jake O’Brien to aim at. Arsenal, despite conceding from a corner to Bayer Leverkusen midweek, have an excellent record defending set pieces. Get ready for the meatwall, folks.
Arsenal will be without Mikel Merino, Martin Ødegaard, and Leandro Trossard. The Spaniard is almost certainly out for the rest of the season. The skipper isn’t expected back until after the upcoming international break. Not much is known about the Belgian’s injury, but it isn’t thought to be a serious one. Christian Norgaard is a surprise absentee from the teamsheet.
Everton are without Jack Grealish, who had season-ending surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot. Carlos Alcaraz is out with a muscle problem. Seamus Coleman is carrying a knock but fit enough to make the bench.
