Harry Kane doesn’t miss penalties often. In fact, Kane converted 10 out of 10 of his Bundesliga penalties this season — until Bayern’s 1-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg.
Bayern earned a penalty kick in the 35th minute after Michael Olise caught Konstantinos Koulierakis’s oustretched leg. As per standard procedure, Kane stepped up to take the penalty, but then, something unimaginable happened — he missed.
At first glance, it appeared as if Kane simply blasted his shot over the goal. But, upon closer inspection,
the Englishman’s left foot slipped just before striking the ball, throwing him off balance and sending the ball into an ecstatic ocean of Wolfsburg supporters. However, there may be more to the story of Kane’s first Bundesliga penalty miss this season, and it involves a savvy piece of sabotage.
According to footage captured by Sky cameras (via @iMiaSanMia), Jeanuël Belocian was spotted trampling the penalty spot ahead of Kane’s miss.
This could very well have caused the 32-year-old striker to slip and miss his penalty. On the other hand, Belocian tramples the penalty spot, and that isn’t where Kane plants his foot before striking the ball.
The devil is in the detail, but the detail is still open for interpretation on this one.
What do you think? Is Belocian’s practice in the dark arts to blame? Or did Kane simply slip and miss his penalty?
