It’s rumor season and that means people are starting to move. We’ll start hearing about players that are on the trade block for a variety of reasons, but this one is interesting.
Marte, as you know, has been a force lately while playing second base for the Diamondbacks. 2024 saw him land a top three finish in the MVP voting with a season that saw him hit
36 home runs and have 95 RBI, good for a 152 wRC+. Last season, he was just as good at the plate, a 145 wRC+ that also had him striking out at his lowest rate since the 2020 COVID shortened season.
The Phillies have checked in on him, likely as due diligence, but the availability of Marte should call some things in question. He’s on a decent contract, five years remaining on the rest of his deal even as he plays at 32 years old this coming season. His production has remained steady for a few years, sitting near the top of the league at his position.
Why would Arizona want to deal him?
In any case, the Phillies checking in on him is a wise move as they look to upgrade at that spot. Bryson Stott has been a solid player for them, but getting Marte would represent that upgrade they might be looking for. The trade cost might be prohibitive, so let’s file this one under “keep an eye on it.”
