Late Friday night, news broke that the Detroit Lions are signing veteran running back Trayveon Williams, according to Aaron Wilson.
Williams was a sixth-round pick in 2019 for the Cincinnati Bengals. He stayed with the Bengals for six seasons, appearing in 68 games over that span, mostly serving on special teams, logging 873 snaps in that phase. Some of those snaps were on kick returns, as he has a career total of 42 kick returns for 995 yards (an average of 22.7). That said, he only has 72 rushes
and 343 rushing yards in his NFL career.
As a running back, Williams is short (5-foot-8) but stocky (206 pounds). He gained a strong reputation in college for his tenacious attitude as a blocker, and a few very productive seasons at Texas A&M. In his junior and final year with the Aggies, he led the SEC with 1,760 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.
The Lions could use a little depth at running back right now, as the position is currently filled with injuries. Detroit only had three running backs suited up on Thursday, with Isiah Pacheco, Sione Vaki, and Jabari Small sidelined with injuries and Jahmyr Gibbs resting.
As of right now, the signing of Williams is not official, and no corresponding move has been announced by the team.
