The NFL officially announced the entirety of the 2026 season schedule Thursday night and there are plenty of upcoming storylines to note.
For the New England Patriots, here are six things to keep an eye on on this year’s schedule.
Super Bowl rematch
After facing off in the final game of the 2025–26 season, the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are set to meet again in the first game of the 2026–27 campaign. Following Seattle’s 29–13 victory in Super Bowl LX, the Patriots will
have an immediate opportunity to showcase their offseason upgrades — and seek revenge — as the Seahawks raise their championship banner on opening night.
The season opener is officially set for a rare Wednesday night kickoff on September 9, at 8:20 p.m. ET at Lumen Field. It will mark the first time in a decade that the NFL season opens with a Super Bowl rematch and the first time the Patriots have kicked off the season since 2019 following their Super Bowl LIII victory.
Home opener
With New England on the road to start the regular season, the team’s first game at Gillette Stadium will come in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers — its only home game in the opening month, all against reigning playoff teams. It’s a rematch of last season’s Week 3 contest, when New England turned the ball over five times in a 21–14 loss.
Pittsburgh is still awaiting clarity on Aaron Rodgers’ future, but the expectation is that the veteran will be back under center for the Steelers next season. New England may be relieved just not to see Geno Smith opening the year at Gillette Stadium, as the veteran has beaten the Patriots in home openers in each of the last two seasons with different teams.
Primetime
Welcome back to life as a contender. After several consecutive years with limited primetime exposure — including just one game in 2024 — the Patriots are once again among the league’s featured teams, drawing five games under the lights following their run to Super Bowl LX last season.
That starts immediately with the aforementioned season opener in Seattle, along with an AFC playoff rematch against the Los Angeles Chargers (SNF) and potentially the Denver Broncos, which may be flexed into prime time during Week 17. The Patriots will also play two Thursday Night Football games, both against NFC North opponents (Bears and Vikings), and a Monday Night Football game against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Return to Germany
The Patriots will return to Germany for the first time since 2023 — their debut in Frankfurt, a game the franchise would like to forget as Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe threw costly fourth-quarter interceptions to seal a 10–6 defeat.
New England will look for better results this time around in Munich against the Lions in Week 10. And despite Detroit serving as the official home team, a strong Patriots crowd is expected, as the organization has established Germany as one of its “home markets” through the NFL’s international initiative.
Bye week
Similar to 2023, the Patriots will follow their Week 10 game in Germany with a Week 11 bye. It marks the earliest bye the team has had since, as New England had the latest possible Week 14 bye in each of the past two seasons.
While Mike Vrabel went a perfect 6–0 following the bye week in the regular season during his time in Tennessee, the Patriots suffered a loss to the Buffalo Bills coming out of the bye last year.
Traveling far
The overseas trip highlights a season of heavy travel for the Patriots, who will also make two West Coast trips to face the Seahawks and Chargers. In total, New England is set to travel 27,590 air miles this season — the fifth-most in the league.
The Patriots were near the bottom of the league in travel last year, as their 12,547 regular-season miles ranked sixth-lowest. Their furthest trips west came in Cincinnati and New Orleans.
