Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine, Brandon Cisse and Benjamin St-Juste have all gotten first-team snaps during camp, and as Justis Mosqueda recently noted,it seems like the competition at corner is really opening up.
So as Green Bay takes the field against the Denver Broncos on Friday night, noting the cornerback rotation will be particularly interesting (preseason-relativity caveat for “interesting”).
Which corners are on the field and when? Who gets the most meaningful snaps? Who does it seem like
they trust the most?
Those questions also carry additional weight now that we’ve recently heard some chatter about possible trade conversations.
Recent reporting indicates teams have called the Packers about Valentine, while other reports have connected Green Bay to the broader cornerback market. That’s not confirmation that a trade is coming, but smoke usually means fire, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.
If Cisse or St-Juste continues to look ready for an expanded role, the Packers could feel increasingly comfortable making a difficult decision involving one of their veterans. Conversely, if the younger corners struggle, Green Bay may decide its current group needs reinforcement.
So as I watch tonight’s game, my thirty thousand foot lens will be fixed on any indications of whether the team seems poised to try to solve cornerback from within, or bank on looking elsewhere.
