Setting the scene
SMU (4-1, 2-1 ACC) returns from its bye week, still supplemented with a No. 24 ranking beside its name. The Mustangs already dropped a conference matchup — just their third since joining the ACC in 2024 — but that doesn’t necessarily put them behind in the standings. All 17 ACC teams except for Miami (FL) have already lost in conference play, making the race for the championship as wide open as ever.
Virginia (4-2, 2-1 ACC) qualified for the championship last season, but this year has been a roller
coaster for the Cavaliers. They were briefly ranked but then suffered two double-digit defeats. It appeared as if the adversity would continue when Virginia trailed Syracuse by 10 in the second half deficit last week, but it responded with 21 unanswered to claim a second ACC victory.
This Saturday in Dallas, the last two ACC runners-up — both equipped with 2-1 conference records — will make a push to return to Charlotte for the first week of December.
Virginia Cavaliers outlook
Virginia absorbed its first punch last week against Syracuse. The Cavaliers’ previous three wins were wire-to-wire blowouts by a combined score of 135-14. And their two losses were by a combined 42 points. In Week 6, Virginia overcame its first hurdle of the season, flipping a 17-7 deficit into a 28-25 victory — its first one-score finish of 2026.
Despite the victory, Virginia still has to solve its recent offensive issues. The Cavaliers were substantially outgained 430-288 to Syracuse, and the previous week at Florida State, they were outgained 464-205. Virginia is heavily reliant on the run game, but it managed only an aggregate 200 rushing yards across those two conference matchups. Quarterback Beau Pribula posted 110 rushing yards in the opener against NC State but has since been bottling up, accouting for -13 rushing yards in the five games following.
Still, Jekail Middlebrook has been thriving in Virginia’s deep running back rotation, and he enters Saturday coming off a 95-yard, 2-touchdown performance. Now the Cavaliers just need to get one of their other backs — Xay Davis, Xavier Brown, or Noah Vaughn — back in the rhythm or open things back up with Pribula.
Additionally, Virginia’s veteran offensive line — the most experienced in the country with over 11,000 combined snaps — needs to step up. The unit allowed 10 sacks against Florida State. Virginia allows the fifth-most sacks in the FBS despite ranking 100th in passing attempts per game. Even with this pressure, Pribula has taken excellent care of the ball as a passer, delivering 13 touchdowns while throwing just one interception. Kameron Courtney and Da’Shawn Martin will take on greater roles as his top receivers, especially if Rico Flores Jr. remains unavailable after suffering a non-contact injury against Syracuse.
The Cavaliers’ defense has been extremely volatile in performance. They’ve held three opponents to single-digits and also allowed 25 points or greater in three other games, including 38 in both defeats. The primary struggle has been the run defense which was exploited by West Virginia and Florida State — especially by those teams’ quarterbacks, who both produced over 120 yards and at least three touchdowns on the ground. Linebackers Maddox Marcellus and Kam Robinson will be tasked with limiting SMU’s high-powered rushing attack and preventing the occasional Kevin Jennings scramble.
Virginia is exceptional as a passing defense, but the team took a brutal hit losing cornerback Omillio Agard for the season. The Cavaliers still feature star corner Jacobie Henderson in the secondary, and he brings 35 tackles and five pass breakups to the table for the nation’s 18th-ranked pass defense. Coming down with interceptions is essential to stop this SMU offense, and Virginia’s defensive backs do a great job with that. Strong safety Brandyn Hillman leads the defense with three of the unit’s seven picks this season.
SMU Mustangs outlook
Perhaps a bye week is exactly what SMU needed. In 2023, the Mustangs responded to their bye week with eight-straight wins. In 2024, they won nine-straight after their first bye week. Last season, it was three-straight wins and six in a seven-game stretch.
The Mustangs know they have ACC Championship Game potential, but that wasn’t met in the first five weeks of the season — beating Florida State by three in a turnover-riddled game, losing to Louisville by 10, and surviving Missouri State and Boston College at home by 10 and nine points, respectively. SMU now remains in Dallas for the third entry of a four-game homestand, looking for that annual post-bye week improvement to kick in.
SMU’s offense is unquestionably one of the most dynamic in the FBS. The Mustangs are 14th in yards per game, third in passing, 12th in third down conversion rate, and tied for first in 50-yard passes. However, they’re just 46th in scoring output at 34.6 points per game, meaning they move the ball, but accidents happen. SMU has come up emptyhanded on five red zone trips this year and committed an ACC-high nine turnovers.
Kevin Jennings and Co. aim to fix that. The star quarterback is currently second nationally with 318 passing yards per game, and he’s going vertically with incredible efficiency, connecting on 75.0 percent of attempts — third in the FBS among players with 70 attempts. If Jennings can limit interceptions, SMU’s passing offense can be borderline unstoppable.
Yamir Knight, Jalen Cooper, Yannick Smith, and Jalen Hale form one of the sport’s most explosive wide receiver corps. All four can thrive as vertical threats, which is a huge reason why SMU is sixth in the country in passing yards per attempt. Even the tight ends — Randy Pittman Jr. and Theo Melin Öhrström — have played a significant role in the passing combine, ranking atop the team in touchdowns with three and four, respectively.
SMU’s run game doesn’t have the same explosiveness as the passing attack, but the Mustangs have proven their mettle in this facet. Kendrick Raphael rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns against Louisville, and he’s eighth in the ACC in ground production. However, Boston College shut down the run game in SMU’s last outing, and it will look for Raphael, Dramekco Green, and Derrick McFall to pick up the steam to make the offense more balanced.
On defense, the Mustangs have the same identity as usual — a dominant front. SMU ranks sixth in the FBS in sacks per game at 3.4, checking in the national top-25 for the fourth-straight season. The defensive line success was prominent against Boston College, as SMU produced five sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Even down starting defensive end Ira Singleton IV for the year, the Mustangs continue to exhibit impressive depth. Marques White stepped up with three sacks in that Boston College game, and he enters Saturday as the team leader.
The run defense has struggled at times, which may not be ideal against Virginia. However, SMU vastly improved its passing defense from 2025, checking in at 24th in the FBS in fewest yards allowed. New transfer defensive backs Jarvis Lee and Jimmy Wyrick have reinvigorated the group as some of the premier tacklers on the team.
Prediction
SMU’s offense is much more explosive and effective than Virginia’s, but can the Cavaliers force enough Mustang mistakes to pull out the victory? SMU is a minus-5 in the turnover battle in ACC play this year, and the Cavaliers have forced their opponents into frequent miscues and interceptions.
Virginia’s ground attack should see success against SMU’s run defense which will keep it within striking distance. But the Mustangs’ skill position players will ultimately emerge with several home-run plays to emerge in Dallas. SMU collects a reassuring victory coming off the bye week, just like usual.
Prediction: SMU 35, Virginia 31
