If you forgot Brennan Ward is on the Kentucky Football roster, you probably aren’t alone.
The fourth-string quarterback had not seen any live game action until the Vanderbilt matchup. 2nd-string QB Callum Wither threw an incomplete pass against South Alabama and appeared against Youngstown State, while Matt Ponatoski took a few snaps vs. South Alabama, but no other quarterback had seen the field.
That cameo against Vandy didn’t surprise his head coach or his fellow teammates.
Ward runs the Kentucky
scout team whenever the defense faces a running quarterback. That means he spent weeks simulating mobile threats like LaNorris Sellers, John Mateer, Sam Leavitt, Marcel Reed, and Keelon Russell.
He performed so well in practice that the head coach told Joe Sloan to find a way to get Ward in the game.
“This week, I made it mandatory. I said, get him something that he can run the ball,” said Stein. “I love what Joe came up with. It was great, especially with two quarterbacks on the field. It was definitely an impressive run and play.”
Safety Ty Bryant noted how “proud” he was when Ward scored. Bryant explained that coaches often claim they evaluate scout team performance, and this moment proved the Kentucky staff actually means it.
This approach shows the coaching staff evaluates every player every time they step on the field. That breeds real competition every time any player steps on the field. They believe they will get a chance in a live game if they perform well in practice.
Of course, that is how it should be. But if you have played competitive sports, you know that some guys are there just to be bodies and to simulate things.
The mentality of everything matters permeates the entire Kentucky roster. Will Stein previously stated he refuses to waste any practice time, and players noted how different the spring program was. There were no breaks, and Stein said he wanted everything to flow from one thing to another. He even skipped releasing a spring depth chart because he prefers rotating players to see how they perform, and if they play well, they play more in the games.
This strategy keeps the roster invested, and that means practices are intense. Those practices lead to moments like Saturday night, when Ward heard his number called and answered with a touchdown.
With mobile quarterbacks looming on the schedule against Florida, Missouri, and Louisville, fans might see even more of Ward on the field before the season ends.
