Welcome to Thanksgiving Day, a holiday that the Green Bay Packers have started to make annual appearances on once again in recent years. Today, the Packers will play on Turkey Day for the third consecutive
season as they take on their NFC North rivals, the Detroit Lions.
The Packers last played in Detroit on Thanksgiving in 2023, when they defeated Detroit in an upset 29-22. Last season, the Packers hosted a Thanksgiving game for the first time since 2015, beating the Miami Dolphins 30-17 in the night game.
Today, though, they are back in Detroit once again to renew a long-standing holiday rivalry. These two teams have met 22 times before on Thanksgiving, including every year from 1951 through 1963. Detroit leads the series 12-9-1 on the holiday, though the Packers still hold a commanding lead in the two teams’ overall head-to-head series when looking at all games.
This game is a big one, however, as these two teams are each within a game of the Chicago Bears for the NFC North lead. Chicago will have a tough game on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday afternoon, and the Packers will face them twice in the following three weeks. If Green Bay can win in Detroit, they’ll be in a great position to control their own path to an NFC North title. If not, they’ll need some help in the final five weeks.
