The Gophers used a balanced attack and elite defense to stifle the Campbell Camels, winning 78-50. The starting five for Minnesota hit double figures and Cade Tyson led all scorers with 24.
THE STAT: Minnesota continues to play a brand of offensive basketball that moves the ball and gets baskets with assists. On Sunday the Gophers made 30 field goals, 26 of them with an assist. Not quite as good as 27 out of 28 in their win over Texas Southern, but this is an impressive stat.
TURNING POINT: Much like
the Texas Southern game, this one was never in doubt. Jalen Crocker-Johnson made a 3-pointer to get the scoring started for the Gophers and that sparked a 15-2 run to start the game.
HOT: The Big Ten’s leading scorer is Tyson and he continues to pour on the points. He is 11/17 from three in the last two games and has 62 points. The Big Ten portion of the schedule will be tougher for Tyson, but he is hot and has to be one of the best portal additions in the conference.
NOT: The Camel offense found things very difficult. The Gopher defense held them to just 0.824 points per possession, their 2nd lowest offensive efficiency of the season. Campbell had their highest turnover rate of the season and was just 3/16 from three.
GOOD MOVE: Scheduling this game right after Campbell played Gonzaga. Obviously, Niko Medved didn’t plan for this, but the Camels played a surprisingly close game for 30 minutes at Gonzaga earlier in the week. Feels like this was an emotional, let-down game for Campbell.
UP NEXT: Another game against a low-major opponent, the last one before the Big Ten season gets fully underway. Minnesota has this week off before playing Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday, 12/29. The Knights might be the worst team on our schedule and should be a third consecutive win before the Gophers head to Northwestern to start the new year.
