The 2026-27 Mizzou wrestling season will get an early preview this week as two Tigers take the international stage.
All-American redshirt sophomore Aeoden Sinclair and incoming freshman Yandel Morales will represent their respective countries at the U20 Freestyle World Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia, beginning Thursday.
Sinclair will compete for the United States at 86 kilograms (189lbs), while Morales will represent Puerto Rico at 65 kilograms (143lbs).
For Sinclair, the tournament
caps a busy freestyle offseason after a breakout college campaign. He finished third in the 184lbs division at the 2026 NCAA Championships and carried that momentum into the summer, competing across U20, U23 and senior-level tournaments.
Sinclair entered the U20 season with two consecutive runner-up finishes at the U20 U.S. Open. This spring, he finally reached the top, winning the 86-kilogram title with a dominant 9-0 victory over Brock Mantanona.
He also finished third in the senior division at the same weight just days before winning the U20 championship.
His performance earned him a spot on the U.S. U20 World Team. Sinclair defeated Mantanona twice at the World Team Trials in May, winning 6-0 and 10-0 to secure his place in Bratislava.
The field will provide Sinclair with another opportunity to test himself against some of the world’s best young wrestlers. Among his opponents are two World medalists, including 2024 U20 champion Alp Arslan Begenjov of Turkmenistan.
Sinclair enters the tournament with international success of his own, having won U20 gold at the 2024 Pan-American Championships.
“I’m honored to represent my country at U20 Worlds,” Sinclair said. “I’m grateful to my coaches and teammates who pushed me to get here. Sharing the mat with the top wrestlers in the world is an incredible experience, and I plan to make the most of every moment.”
While Sinclair is already an established part of Mizzou’s lineup, Morales gives Tiger fans an early look at one of the program’s newest additions.
The Andover, Massachusetts, native won three Massachusetts state championships before spending his senior season at Lake Highland Prep in Florida. Morales finished his high school career with a runner-up finish at the NHSCA High School Nationals.
“Representing Puerto Rico at the U20 World Championships is an honor,” Morales said. “To my coaches and teammates, thank you for your guidance and constant support. I’m forever grateful for this opportunity.”
Morales previously represented Puerto Rico in 2023, winning a bronze medal at the U17 Pan-American Championships and finishing ninth at the U17 World Championships.
He added another international medal earlier this year with a third-place finish at the U20 Pan-American Championships. His only loss in that tournament came against American wrestler Bo Bassett, who will also compete at 65 kilograms in Bratislava.
For Mizzou fans, the tournament offers a chance to see two wrestlers at very different points in their Tiger careers. Sinclair is looking to build on an All-American season and establish himself as one of the country’s top wrestlers, while Morales is beginning his journey in Columbia with an international test against some of the best wrestlers in the world.
Sinclair’s competition begins Thursday, with qualification rounds scheduled for 3 a.m. CT and semifinals at 9:45 a.m. Medal matches for his weight class are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
Morales will begin competition Friday, with the qualification rounds scheduled for 3 a.m. CT and semifinals at 10 a.m. Medal matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
