What is the story about?
Good
morning, foLLks, and happy Thursday!
In Mariners news:
- Jayson Stark at The Athletic interviewed several of Cal Raleigh’s teammates, as well as the Mariners’ front office, getting an inside look at what chasing history has looked like from the sidelines. ($)
- Staying on theme, FanGraphs has created a simulator to predict when he may hit his 60th, 62nd, and 63rd home run of his historic year.
- Minor League Baseball announced their High-A awards for 2025, and a pair of Mariners top prospects got some love.
Around the league:
- The Cubs became the third team in the National League to clinch a postseason berth, winning 8-4 over the Pirates to punch their playoff ticket for the first time since 2020.
- Brief former Mariner (and personal favorite depth reliever of mine) Sauryn Lao was called up by the Nationals, as the Nats look ahead to 2026 after a tough season. Lao was claimed off waivers on the 3rd after pitching in a pair of games for the Mariners, his first two in the bigs.
- After tossing four innings against the A’s last night, Lucas Giolito surpassed 140 innings pitched for the Red Sox this season. His $14M club option has thus been converted to a $19M mutual option, meaning he has the choice to opt out in favor of a $1.5M buyout and test the free agent market – an opportunity he will almost certainly take.
- The fire sale the Twins have been engaged in hasn’t been limited to on the field: the club has slashed their pro scouting department to just a single staffer. ($)
- Major League Baseball has scrapped plans to host games in London in 2026.
