I think it’s fair to say Savion Williams has been a forgotten man in the Packers’ wide receiver reconstruction this offseason.
In the process of jettisoning Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks, most of the focus went to Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Matthew Golden. And, in fairness, it should. Watson and REed signed pricey extensions this offseason, and Golden is a second-year first round pick looking to break out after a disappointing rookie campaign.
But Williams is in a smaller version of the
same boat as Golden. As good as it gets from a height/weight/seed standpoint, Williams played a gadget role and not much else in 2024 as Matt LaFleur tried to harness his physical gifts in unique ways. It kind of worked and kind of didn’t, but after 91 snaps on offense, injuries ended Williams’ season.
Now he’s prepping for a second go-round int he NFL, and things might be a bit simpler this year. Skyy Moore is on hand to handle the Packers’ return duties and could do some of the gadgety stuff Williams was asked to do last year. That could allow Williams to focus on being a wide receiver.
That presents a challenge in and of itself; the common knock on Williams coming out of Texas Christian was that he was a magnificent athlete who had yet to learn the nuances of playing wide receiver. That seemed to largely be true in 2025, but if he can get his feet under him and show he can do actual wide receiver things, he’d be a powerful addition to a Packers wide receiver room already in the midst of an interesting rebuild.
