Newcastle United’s summer rebuild is expected to continue with more arrivals before the transfer window closes, and those additions could trigger further departures from Eddie Howe’s squad.
After completing the first few signings of the summer and bringing in a few fresh and young faces, Chronicle Live’s Sean McCormick reported that goalkeeper Nick Pope remains one of the senior players whose future could depend on Newcastle completing more transfer business before the start of the Premier League
season.
Pope, 34, has been Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper for the past four seasons, but his position has come under increasing scrutiny following an inconsistent 2025-26 campaign in which he lost the starting gig to on-loan Aaron Ramsdale.
According to Chronicle Live, the Magpies are searching for a goalkeeper who is more comfortable in possession as they continue evaluating options for a new No. 1.
Although Newcastle signed 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims earlier this summer, everybody agrees the Frenchman is not currently viewed as an immediate starter after gaining first-team experience exclusively in Ligue 2.
As a result, Newcastle is still expected to sign a proper starting goalkeeper before the transfer window closes to replace Pope as the team’s new No. 1.
Should that happen, as reported earlier this summer by multiple outlets, Chronicle Live also agrees in reporting that Pope is expected to move on, with his boyhood club Ipswich Town, as well as Leeds, continuing to be linked with the England international.
However, given the current situation in Newcastle’s net, no departure is considered imminent. Until Newcastle secures another established goalkeeper — whether that’s Zion Suzuki or James Trafford — Pope is expected to remain at St. James’ Park and continue playing a full role during the preseason, at the very least.
