Bayern Munich dropped points against Schalke for the first time since 2017 per @iMiaSanMia), as the newly promoted side held the defending champions to a 0-0 draw at the VELTINS-Arena. The result ended Bayern’s run of 10 consecutive victories over Schalke.
It was a frustrating evening for Vincent Kompany’s team. Bayern Munich controlled the majority of possession and created several opportunities, but Schalke’s compact defensive setup proved extremely difficult to break down. Loris Karius was particularly
impressive in goal, producing several important saves to preserve his clean sheet.
Kompany initially started Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the bench, while Jamal Musiala also began among the substitutes as Bayern looked to manage their attacking options. The game changed somewhat after Kane, Olise and Musiala were introduced, but Bayern still could not find the breakthrough. Musiala’s return was nevertheless a major positive, as he made his comeback after his recent health issues.
Schalke deserves massive credit. Playing its first Bundesliga home match in more than three years,Schalke defended with discipline, competed for every ball and secured a point that will feel like a victory.
For Bayern Munich, however, it is two points dropped. After opening the season with a dominant 5-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart, the champions leave Gelsenkirchen frustrated — and no longer perfect.
