When New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered his season-ending knee injury in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, head coach John Harbaugh held out hope that Dart would be able to return for the playoffs, should the Giants reach them.
General manager Joe Schoen said on Tuesday that remains Dart’s aim.
“He still thinks if we make the playoffs that he’s going to be able to come back. That’s just his mindset,” Schoen said. “He’s in the locker room trying to do pass sets, dying to go back in the game.
So, he’s one of those guys you appreciate his toughness and grit. And you’ve got to protect him from himself sometimes.
“You guys saw the way he played his rookie season. You love the toughness in the competitor. And he’s going to come back stronger and better than ever.”
Dart suffered damage to the MCL, PCL, and meniscus in his left knee. There was no damage to the ACL. According to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kyle Flik, the extent of damage to the PCL will determine how quickly Dart can return. If it had to be reconstructed, which is unknown right now, a return for the playoffs would be out of the question.
On ‘Up & Adams’ with Kay Adams, right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor said Dart has willingly been helping replacement quarterback J.J. mcCarthy.
Schoen said Dart is “doing the best he can.”
“I know it’s tough for him. He’s coming to the team meetings. He’s back in the quarterback meetings. So he’s around. He’s not weight-bearing yet. So he’s on his crutches. But he’s staying as positive as he can,” Schoen said. “He’s around, which I think is good, mentally being around the guys, being around football still.”
As indicated by our Dart-McCarthy postearlier Thursday, there is already much-too-early speculation about the future at quarterback for the Giants should McCarthy continue to play well.
