Three points against Napoli will always make for a better Monday. But now that the excitement of the win has settled a little, there’s quite a bit to unpack about how this game actually played out.
This wasn’t exactly a meeting of Serie A heavyweights. It was eighth place against seventh, with two sides still trying to figure out exactly who they are and what they want to be. A 2-0 win makes things look pretty comfortable on paper, but I don’t think the game itself was quite as straightforward as the scoreline
suggests.
For me, this was very much a game of two halves. The first 45 minutes showed what this team can look like when things click and we play to our strengths. The second was a reminder of how quickly things can become difficult when we’re forced to change the way we play.
It forces us to look directly at two simultaneous shifts — how we structured our midfield and how we managed our share of possession — and ask a hard question: when everything changes at once, what are we actually learning about our process?
To start the match, Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti rolled out a three-man midfield. Instead of anchoring a deep single pivot with two advanced midfielders pushed high up the pitch, it operated as a fluid, flat three. Everyone had the license to roam based on where the ball was. On one phase, you’d see Weston McKennie or Teun Koopmeiners drifting wide to lock down the flanks and provide defensive cover. On the next, Douglas Luiz was pushing forward or dropping deep — most notably when he seemed to be shadowing Kevin De Bruyne whenever the Belgian drifted into his zone out of possession.
From a purely tactical perspective, this flat configuration solves a massive spatial problem for us.
When you play a single pivot with two high interior midfielders, your central midfielder is left holding an enormous amount of lateral turf. If an opponent has intelligent rovers like De Bruyne who hunt for pockets between the lines, a single pivot gets stretched to the absolute limit.
By flattening out the trio, Juventus created a natural screen across the middle of the park.
No single player was forced to sprint 30 yards sideways to close down a passing lane. Instead, the three of them shifted as a synchronized accordion. If Douglas Luiz stepped up to press De Bruyne, Koopmeiners and McKennie immediately squeezed inward to narrow the gap behind him.
It wasn’t a rigid formation drawn up on a chalkboard. It was a living unit that stayed compact, moved together, and constantly gave each other passing options.
Paired with a more pragmatic, counter-attacking approach where Juve held just 43% of the ball in the first half, it completely altered how the game flowed.
Because Juve weren’t obsessing over holding the ball, they allowed Napoli to step forward into our half. That created the one thing modern football attacks desperately need: space behind the opponent’s midfield line.
When Juve won the ball back, they didn’t have to break down ten men standing inside their own box. We had clear passing lanes, open grass to run into, and immediate options on the break.
And honestly? For the first forty-five minutes, it worked brilliantly.
Even sitting at 0-0 when the teams walked off at the break, the game leaned heavily in Juventus’ favor. Juve managed 21 touches inside Napoli’s penalty box compared to just eight for them in ours. Juve out-shot Napoli 7-to-4, taking five of those attempts inside the box, and built a solid 0.54 to 0.26 xG advantage by halftime. The process was working about as well as could be expected from a team still reeling from injuries.
Juve weren’t dominating the ball, but we were completely controlling the danger. We looked compact, sharp, and physically engaged.
Then halftime hit, and everything flipped.
With McKennie forced off due to injury concerns, the coaching staff was pushed into a corner. Instead of replacing McKennie like-for-like with another midfielder to keep that fluid engine running — someone like Pape Matar Sarr — Spalletti brought on Federico Gatti, shifting away from the starting shape into a familiar 3-4-2-1. That shift pushed Douglas Luiz right back down into that flat, two-man midfield pairing we’ve all come to know and dread as fans. Meanwhile, Kerim Alajbegovic, Randal Kolo Muani, and later Edon Zhegrova tucked in much narrower than anyone had operated in the first half.
Along with that structural change came a dramatic shift in the game state itself: we suddenly started hoarding possession. Our share of the ball jumped from a modest 43% in the first half up to 54% in the second. And as soon as we started holding the ball, life immediately became much harder for us.
To understand why this happens, you have to look at the geometry of a two-man midfield when trying to play a possession-heavy style. When you only have two central midfielders and you push your wing-backs high, you create a massive spatial donut in the center of the pitch. The two central players get pinned deep just to protect against counter-attacks.
Without a third central midfielder to drop into half-spaces or connect the play between the lines, passing options completely dry up. Your center-backs look up, see no clean central passing lanes, and are forced to play safe, lateral passes out to the touchlines.
That’s how you end up with the dreaded U-shaped possession pattern. The ball travels from left center-back, to central midfielder, to right center-back, out to the wing-back, and back again. It looks like control on a stat sheet, but in reality, it’s harmless. It gives the defending team all the time in the world to shift their defensive block side-to-side without ever being pulled out of position.
Compounding the issue was how narrow Alajbegovic, Kolo Muani, and Zhegrova were playing.
Because Juve’s wing-backs weren’t consistently overlapping to stretch Napoli’s defense wide, our central attackers were effectively squeezed into the exact same central channels where Napoli’s low block was already sitting. Instead of opening up space, we accidentally helped Napoli defend us by clogging our own attacking corridors.
Despite holding the ball more, our attacking metrics plummeted across the board. Our touches in the opposition box dropped from 21 down to 15. Our shots from inside the box fell from 5 down to 4.
And even though we took more total shots as the game wore on, our total expected goals for the entire second half was less than half of what we generated before the break — dropping from 0.54 xG all the way down to a meager 0.25 in the second half.
We held the ball, we moved the lines up, but we completely suffocated our own space.
Trying to untangle why the second half went flat is a puzzle. Because both the system change and the jump in possession happened at the exact same moment at halftime, the variables are muddy.
Could a two-man midfield function effectively if we committed strictly to a low-block, counter-attacking setup? We can’t entirely rule out the theory, because we haven’t seen it tested in a clean environment.
Could a possession-heavy style look fluid if it were anchored by a dynamic three-man midfield instead of two central players? The idea is plausible on paper, but again, we haven’t seen the evidence on the pitch yet.
What we do know is that combining those two shifts simultaneously — forcing a flat two-man midfield to orchestrate heavy, slow possession against a set defense — produces a clogged, stagnant attack. It’s been a consistent problem going back to last season.
The fact that we won 2-0 doesn’t change that reality. Those goals came courtesy of two absolute long-range screamers from Alajbegovic and Jérémie Boga.
When I look at this team through a process-oriented lens, I can’t credit the second-half setup for those moments. Long-range, low-probability rockets struck through a crowded box aren’t distinct tactical mechanisms born out of a specific, repeatable pattern. They are individual moments of brilliance that occur almost entirely independent of team structure. Every team takes those shots — defensive teams, possession teams, high-pressers, and low-block sitters alike. They are high-variance events.
When a team strikes two 25-yard bangers in a single half, it flatters the manager’s scoreboard while masking the underlying structural issues. It’s easy to celebrate the highlight reel and forget that for 40 minutes of that half, we struggled to string three meaningful passes together near the opposition box. For my money, chalking those screamers up to a functional second-half system would mean letting the final score obscure the actual process.
Think back to what we talked about after the Genoa match.
Against Genoa, the stats suggested we played okay because we held 63% possession and won the xG battle, but the eye test revealed a team operating without urgency, passion, or basic physical engagement.
Against Napoli, the exact inverse happened: the scoreboard shows a clean 2-0 victory, but looking closely at how the match unfolded shows a second half where our process completely stalled out.
In both cases, relying on surface-level outputs — whether it’s raw possession stats against Genoa or a headline scoreline against Napoli — leads us astray.
At the end of the day, Sunday night’s match gave us a clear blueprint of what works for this squad right now. It showed us the value of a compact, hard-working three-man midfield — one where players are willing to share space, cover for each other, and hurt opponents quickly on the counter. And it gave us a stark reminder of what bogs us down when we try to force a slow, possession-heavy two-man setup without the right personnel or energy to sustain it.
We got the result, and nobody is throwing three points back against Napoli. Celebrating a win against a rival is what being a fan is all about. But if Spalletti and this staff want to build something sustainable — something that doesn’t rely on low-probability screamers to bail out a flat forty-five minutes — we have to look past the final scoreline.
We have to recognize how the game actually tilted after the break, learn the right lessons from the performance, and figure out how to recapture the fluidity and collective work rate we had in the first half before injuries forced our hand.
