Tony Khan delivered an important announcement on Dynamite to reveal the brand new AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship. Here is a closer peak at the title belts.
With new opportunity comes new possibilities. Let’s look at the state of the women’s tag team division in AEW.
By my count, there are pairs for seven tag teams right now.
- Anna Jay & Tay Melo
- Athena & Billie Starkz
- Deonna Purrazzo & Taya Valkyrie
- Kris Statlander & Harley Cameron
- Julia Hart & Skye Blue
- Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford
- Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa
Some of those are mix and match, such as Thekla subbing in for the Sisters of Sin in the Triangle of Madness. The Vendetta haven’t been on screen for a while, but Purrazzo immediately posted a photo with Taya to suggest she is game for the gold.
As depth is needed down the line, there are several squads that could be reformed who have been temporary partners in the past, such as Baddies Red Velvet & Leila Grey, Timeless & Alex Windsor, and the ThunderTits duo of Thunder & Storm. Not to mention the eventual reunion between Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander.
Freebird rules could be in effect for Mercedes Moné, Harley Cameron, and the mini Moné puppet.
The list continues with makeshift teams with a common bond. Alex Windsor and Jamie Hayter could be a UK connection. Willow could pal with Riho or Yuka Sakazaki as babyfaces. I bet Riho and Yuka would be down to conglomerate. Plus, the idea of Willow in a big/little tag team has potential.
After the promo from Dynamite, imagine Willow and Beth Copeland bringing doom to the ring.
Sprinkle in occasional appearances from CMLL luchadoras and Stardom joshi.
The AEW women’s tag team division will definitely be a work in progress for longevity. The short term looks promising though.
