Of all the positions on the pitch to not need a surplus of players, a third-string left back is probably top of the list. So, although Kostas Tsimikas seems extremely happy to remain at the club as a backup as the self-proclaimed Greek Scouser, getting paid (by someone else) to actually play football might be nice for all parties involved.
Tsimikas has been tipped to leave the club all summer (see: third string left back point above), though few transfer links have materialized for the Greek Scouser.
But according to reports from Italian news source La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have initiated contact between the two clubs with a few to bring Tsimikas in on loan with an option to buy.
I’m sure Liverpool would rather simply sell the player and find Kostas a Forever Home, but considering the seeming paucity of links, simply getting him off their books for the season with the possibility to make the move permanent might be in everyone’s best interests. And bonus points for not being the other club in Rome.
During his five seasons at Liverpool, Tsimikas never really challenged Andy Roberston for a starting role, even last season when Robertson really started showing some miles on the clock. Regardless, he was seemingly a well liked presence in the locker room, and if he was unhappy with his backup status, he never showed it publicly.
Should he leave this window, he will no doubt be fondly remembered for being an important member of some excellent Liverpool squads. And we’ll always have the 2022 FA Cup win over Chelsea, one in which Kostas scored the winning pen.
