The latest set of rankings from the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll were released on Sunday, and Notre Dame found themselves ranked #9 again in both polls.
Oklahoma’s win over Alabama catapulted the Sooners
over the Irish and set the Crimson Tide right behind the Irish. Some (including myself) doubted that the voters would put Alabama behind Notre Dame — but the vote count showed the difference between Oklahoma and Notre Dame was much closer than the difference between Notre Dame and Alabama.
But… is that how the playoff committee will see it? I suppose there are three realistic options for Notre Dame this week in the CFP rankings.
- Ranked at #9 the way the two legacy polls have.
- Ranked #10 with Alabama at #9.
- Ranked #8 with Oklahoma at #9 and Alabama at #10.
Of the three options, the most likely is probably what we see in the legacy polls, but it really is hard to predict as the only consistent thing about the committee (historically) is their ability to inconsistent.
Moving forward there are a handful of games each week that will help shaope the top 12, but it’s hard to see more than one or two big posibilities.
