Bayern Munich is in Norway for a UEFA Champions League clash with Viking FK and Vincent Kompany’s side will need to be prepared for more than just an unfamiliar opponent. Viking’s attacking approach, home atmosphere, and artificial playing surface all make this an intriguing test for the German giants.
Bayern Munich is the clear heavyweight on paper, but the key to this matchup is understanding how Viking can make life uncomfortable for a team that wants to dominate possession, press aggressively,
and attack in waves. Here is a scouting breakdown of the Norwegian side, the players Bayern should know, and the tactical details worth watching.
The Underdogs
Viking is not simply an underdog enjoying a rare European adventure. It won the Norwegian league title in 2025 — its first championship since 1991 — and successfully navigated Champions League qualifying to reach the league phase.
Its domestic form has been particularly impressive. Through 22 league matches, Viking has recorded 17 wins, two draws, and three defeats, scoring 56 goals and conceding 20. That is a team capable of creating plenty of chances and maintaining a high level of consistency over a full season.
Players to Know
- Zlatko Tripić (Midfielder/Winger): The 33-year-old is one of Viking’s most important attacking players and a key figure in their leadership group. Tripić is the creative mastermind for Viking.
- Peter Christiansen (Forward): Christiansen is Viking’s leading domestic scorer, which makes him a major concern for Bayern Munich’s center-backs.
- Joe Bell (Central Midfielder): The New Zealand international is another vital presence in Viking’s midfield. His role will be worth monitoring as FC Bayern attempts to control possession and prevent the hosts from building attacks through the middle.
- Henrik Heggheim (Center-Back): Heggheim’s ability to organize the back line and deal with Bayern Munich’s movement will be crucial.
What to Expect
Viking’s results suggest a team that is comfortable playing proactive football. Their 56 goals in 22 domestic matches demonstrate significant attacking output, while their three defeats indicate that they are not invulnerable.
Bayern Munich should therefore be prepared for periods in which Viking attempts to press, move the ball forward, and use the home crowd’s energy to build momentum. Kompany’s team cannot assume that the hosts will simply sit deep for 90 minutes. Bayern Munich is also likely to commit plenty of players forward, with its outside-backs pushing high and their attackers looking to combine around the box. That naturally creates space behind the defensive line. Viking’s opportunity will be to win the ball and attack before Bayern can reorganize. FC Bayern’s center-backs must be alert to direct passes into Christiansen, while the midfielders will need to counterpress immediately after turnovers. The danger is not necessarily Viking dominating possession; it is Viking making a few decisive attacks count while Bayern Munich is stretched.
Above all, beware of set pieces — Viking is exceptionally dangerous from dead-ball situations.
Bayern Munich should hold the advantage in individual quality, depth, and European experience. If Kompany’s team moves the ball with purpose, limits counterattacks, and stays organized on set pieces, it should be able to create enough opportunities to secure the win.
