All of a sudden and after an endless wait, Newcastle United and the rest of the Premier League have a major development in their hands.
The long-running case surrounding Manchester City is finally nearing its conclusion, with the English giants awaiting the next stage of a process that could carry significant sporting consequences, including a perpetual expulsion from the Premier League.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Friday that Manchester City has been found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges
relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations. Sanctions have not yet been decided, while City is expected to appeal the verdict.
The charges, first brought in February 2023 following a four-year investigation, related to alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018. They included accusations that City failed to provide accurate financial information and details regarding payments to players and coaches, as well as breaches of UEFA financial rules and the Premier League’s own regulations.
“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality,” a Manchester City spokesperson told The Athletic. “As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.”
City has consistently denied wrongdoing and previously said it welcomed an independent commission reviewing what it described as a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” supporting its position.
The potential punishment remains unknown, with The Athletic outlining multiple options available under Premier League rules ranging from a reprimand or fines to points deductions and the aforementioned expulsion from the competition.
Any sanction, however, would also have to survive the expected appeal process, meaning the outcome may still be some distance away.
