Thomas Schneider was an assistant coach under Joachim Löw on the 2014 Germany World Cup squad, but before that he was a defender for both VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96 until his career ended in 2005.
In 2007, Schneider started his coaching career with FC Dingolfing before moving to VfB Stuttgart in 2011 as a youth coach. Eventually, Schneider made his way to the DFB where he would help make history.

Thomas Schneider was an assistant coach to Löw, playing an unheralded role that absolutely contributed
to the team’s success. Schneider served as an assistant coach under Joachim Löw from 2014 to 2018 before becoming Germany’s head scout. He left the DFB in 2021, stating that he wanted to work more closely with a team and be involved in day-to-day decision-making again.
It should be noted that Schneider’s job opened up because Hansi Flick was promoted to sporting director.
What is Thomas Schneider doing now?
In 2018, Germany flamed out at the World Cup and Löw also announced that he would be going forward with a smaller staff than he took to Russia. After the tournament, Löw placed heavy blame on himself and his coaching staff for failing to make adjustments. As the head coach trimmed his staff, Schneider transitioned to a role as head of scouting at the DFB.
After leaving the German national team, Schneider joined the coaching staff of the Belgium national team under former Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig head coach Domenico Tedesco in 2023. However, Tedesco was relieved of his duties in January of 2025 after Belgium officials gave a Tedesco what was rumored to be a less-than-stellar performance review. At that time, Schneider left Belgium as well. As of Schneider is not attached to a club or national team and is not working from what we can see.
At 53-years-old, though, Schneider could emerge on the sidelines again soon.
