With a few weeks remaining until the majority of college sports return to the field, it’s time for Maryland athletics fans to start brushing up on their track and field knowledge.

The World U20 Championships are taking place in Oregon this week, with some of the best young talent from around the world present.
In the first round of the 400m dash, seven qualifying heats, or rounds, contained 60 athletes. The top three from each race, plus the six fastest runners that fell outside that mark,
would qualify for the semifinals.
Wilson was the top seed of the last heat, which is typically comprised of the fastest runners. He faced some serious competition but ran a 45.74-second 400m dash, enough to win the heat and qualify for the final round. He and runner-up Milann Klemenic, who finished nine hundredths of a second behind Wilson, were in a field of their own — they finished about 0.75 seconds ahead of everyone else in their heat.
With all the times from all heats combined into one list, though, Wilson sits second: he’s behind fellow American Jayden Deleon, who ran a 45.63-second 400-meter dash.
Runners that assume they will qualify typically do not put out their fastest time in the qualifiers. Wilson was likely to be no different; his personal best in the 400m is a 44.84, which he recorded in June.
In the end, he ran a 45.02-second 400m just seven hours after his first effort, putting up the top time in the round to qualify for the final. That race will go off at 11:53 p.m. on Friday.

According to projections from ESPN’s Myron Metcalf, Maryland men’s basketball’s floor for the 2026-27 ceiling is 18 wins and an NCAA Tournament miss, while its ceiling is 24 wins and a trip to the round of 32. That ceiling was the 11th-highest in the country.
Pharrel Payne was named the 87th best player in college basketball by Bracketball.
