Eye of the Tiger Management announced today that Mikaela Mayer will attempt to become a three-weight world champion against WBA super welterweight titlist Mary Spencer atop an October 30th show at the Casino Montreal.
EotTM shows generally aired on ESPN+ stateside thanks to their partnership with Top Rank, but as Arum and co. are still shopping for a new broadcast partner, it’s unclear how us Yanks will be able to catch it.
Spencer (10-2, 6 KO), a three-time world champion as an amateur, went one-and-done
at the 2012 Olympics thanks to eventual bronze medalist Li Jinzi. She won her first seven pro bouts, but dropped back-to-back decisions to perennial contender Femke Hermans in 2022 and 2023. Her three wins since have come over marginal opposition.
Now 40, she figures to be a hefty underdog.
“Never in a thousand years did I think I’d get the chance to fight Mikaela Mayer,” Spencer said. “I’ve followed her career a lot, and as a fan, I love her style — but what excites me most is that our styles mesh so well that this will be a truly memorable fight. Saying I’m excited is an understatement, and I hope the fans are too, because this will be epic.”
After her second controversial split decision loss on British soil, Mayer (21-2, 5 KO) edged out Sandy Ryan last September to claim her first welterweight belt, then put a stamp on things in the rematch this May. By her own admission, she’s been unable to land a showdown with three-belt titlist Lauren Price, so she’s turned her sights elsewhere.
“I couldn’t get the undisputed fight with Lauren Price, so rather than take an easy touch, I looked for the next best challenge,” Mayer said. “Beating Mary Spencer at 154 pounds will make me a three-division world champion, and although I may be on the smaller side, I have the necessary skills and experience. I’ll dethrone Mary and then head back down to welterweight to challenge Price. I will be stronger, sharper, and better than ever.”
Wilkens Mathieu and Arthur Biyarslanov highlight the undercard.
