Daniel Peretz was finding minutes hard to come by at Bayern Munich having to compete with Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich and Jonas Urbig, but his loan spell at Hamburg SV has not gone according to plan, either.
He’s only played two matches across all competitions so far this season as manager Merlin Polzin has shown a preference to starting keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes as the club navigates in first season back in the Bundesliga in quite some time. They currently sit in 13th place in the league table.
At this stage, despite Peretz’s previous desire to want to stay at Bayern and fight for his spot in the squad, it’s not too likely that the Israeli international will have a future with the German Rekordmeister. The long-term plan for the reigning Bundesliga champions is to have Urbig eventually take over as the number one keeper once Neuer is no longer the bonafied number one. The club’s front office has already said to expect Urbig to get a handful of matches in the new year, which will be easier to accommodate if Bayern maintains healthy standings both in the Bundesliga in Champions Leaugue.
As for Peretz, per information from SportBild’s Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), the keeper is set to join English Championship side Southampton FC for the remainder of the season after Hamburg SV has terminanted his loan contract from Bayern. So far this season for the Saints, keepers Gavin Bazunu and Alex McCarthy have not been cutting it, thus the club’s interest in bringing in another keeper during the winter transfer window as manager Tonda Eckert looks to break the club out of their rut of no wins from their last four matches in the English second tier.
After a fairly decent start to the season under previous manager Will Still, Southampton currently find themselves in 13th place in the EFL standings as Eckert tries to help the club claw their way back up towards the top end of the table. Adding a new keeper is something the club has identified as helping them get there and Peretz, who is someone eager for first team minutes and does boast some top flight experience, could be the perfect fit for Eckert and company.
