Marc Guéhi may well end up a Liverpool player at the end of the day but as the summer transfer window slammed shut at 7PM BST that remains far from certain. A fee and payment structure is agreed, the medical is done, the personal terms are in place.
Following the collapse of Palace’s attempted transfer of Igor Julio from Brighton, though, the London club are currently unwilling to give their final sign off with manager Oliver Glasner pushing hard for chairman Steve Parish to block the sale of his
club captain.
As a result, Liverpool are in the process of—will have already with the clock having ticked past 7PM—submitting a deal sheet outlining their intent to sign Guéhi for the agreed upon fee. The deal sheet will give the Reds a further two hours to complete the transfer.
Guéhi has been widely praised for his professionalism in the transfer saga, putting his head down and giving his all for Palace through yesterday’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. In the end, though, that professionalism may end up costing him his Liverpool move.
It’s widely believed Glasner is most responsible for attempting to block the deal, with Palace’s senior management having signed off on the transfer. The manager is in the final year of his own contract and few expect him to stay beyond the current season.
There has been further speculation that should the Manchester United job open mid-season, Glasner would see it as an opportunity too good to turn down, setting up a situation where Guéhi could still be at Palace after the man who blocked his Liverpool move has left.
