According to a report by Tz journalist Philipp Kessler
, Bayern Munich are in a hurry to renew sporting director Christoph Freund’s contract which is set to expire next year. Freund’s expertise, work ethic, loyalty and an excellent rapport with manager Vincent Kompany are the key aspects driving the decision to continue with the Austrian until 2029.Initial slipups
Freund is an expert at talent scouting and did a commendable job at his previous club RB Salzburg. His early signings for Bayern Sacha Boey and Bryan
Zaragoza failed to make the expected impact in Munich despite a combined expenditure of €47 million.
The Frenchman’s sub par tenure at Bayern has also been uncertain with the club actively looking for buyers. The Spanish winger Zaragoza has made just zero appearances for Bayern since moving permanently in 2024. The club has not seen him as part of their sporting plans and as a result, the Spaniard has been on loan since two years.
Talent development
Freund’s true calling at Bayern has been handling its youth academy. The Austrian had a significant role to play in pushing Lennart Karl into the first team early on. The young attacker lit the stage up with the opportunities presented and has seen his valuation shoot up to €60 million in a single season.
Felipe Chavez is another of Freund’s favorites. The sporting director ensured the Peruvian midfielder would be tied up with the club till 2028 and loaned him to FC Magdeburg to ensure he gets vital first team minutes. The Peruvian was one of the best youngsters in the pre-season friendlies and he is not far from his integration into the senior Bayern team.
Keeping up with the heavy investors
As football continues to see more of state backed and oil backed investors driving sporting inflation to the stratosphere, razor sharp talent scouting and effective youth development programs are vital counter measures needed to stay competitive.
In light of the changing market, Bayern have been investing into their academy and scouting departments. The results have been impressive so far. Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Lennart Karl, Aleksandar Pavlović, Josip Stanišić are a few examples who came into the club at a very young age before going on to become important first team members in Munich.
Youth management’s growing importance and Christoph Freund’s experience and expertise in the matter have made him an important candidate in the club’s future. The 49 year-old maintains a fantastic relationship with Kompany and is known for being a ‘team player’ in the club. The supervisory board members are therefore fully convinced regarding Freund and looking to complete his renewal at the earliest.
