Maryland baseball’s Tuesday matchup with Delaware was moved from the Blue Hens’ home field to Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium at the last minute due to inclement weather. Those who took advantage of the sudden free admission were in for a show.
The Terps battled to a nail-biting 15-14 win after an early onslaught by both teams and a near-disastrous ninth inning.
Junior southpaw Landon Edwards got the start for Maryland. He struggled with command, walking six batters and allowing four earned runs despite
only one hit across his two innings. Brayden Ryan didn’t fare much better in relief, allowing three more Delaware runs in two more innings on the mound.
But Maryland still led, 12-7, after four innings due to production from up and down the lineup. Six Terps drove in mutliple RBIs, and two — Brayden Martin and Bud Coombs — scored three times. Coombs and Paul Jones II both homered in the fourth inning, each their first of the year — and the first of the freshman Coombs’ collegiate career.
But disaster struck in the top of the ninth. Junior right-hander Andrew Koshy stayed in the game looking to seal up a three-out save. Two plunked batters, a double and a walk set up sophomore Noah Burroughs with the bases loaded in a three-run game. He sent one over the left-field fence to give Delaware a shocking 14-13 lead.
But an RBI single from redshirt freshman Ryan Costello drove in Coombs to tie it in the bottom of the frame. And two batters later, Jones drove in Martin on the game-winning RBI single.
