
The Cubs signed left-hander Austin Gomber and right-hander Joe Ross and assigned them to Triple-A Iowa.
This is the final week of the regular season for South Bend and Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans have made the playoffs. South Bend almost certainly won’t.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs blew past the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 12-0.
Austin Gomber got the win in his Cubs’ debut with five innings of work. He gave up two hits. Gomber struck out five and walked one.
The bullpen didn’t allow another hit the rest of the way.
Keegan Thompson pitched the next two innings, striking out four and walking one. Tyson Miller struck out two and walked no one in his one inning of work. Ethan Roberts retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the two-hitter. Roberts struck out one.
DH Carlos Pérez hit two home runs tonight, giving him 25 on the season. The first one came with two on in the fourth and the second one was with a man on in the sixth. Pérez went 3 for 5 with the five RBI and three runs scored.
Third baseman Dixon Machado went a perfect 3 for 3 with a double and a walk. Machado scored twice and drove in two.
First baseman Jonathon Long was 2 for 3 with two walks. He scored once.

Knoxville Smokies
The Knoxville Smokies were taken to the landfill by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 1-0.
Tommy Romero turned in a strong start of seven innings, giving up just one run on three hits. Still got the loss though. Romero struck out three and walked three.
The Smokies had just four hits. First baseman Pablo Aliendo went 2 for 4 with a double.
DH Corey Joyce had a one-out triple in the sixth, but the Smokies couldn’t get him home. He was 1 for 4.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs dropped their seventh-straight game, 6-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 6-3.
Starter Dawson Netz allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two .
Cole Reynolds relieved Netz, pitched the next two innings and got the loss after giving up two runs on two hits. Reynolds walked one and struck out one.
Catcher Ariel Armas was 2 for 4 with a stolen base. He tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Third baseman Drew Bowser was 2 for 4.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were hypnotized by the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 11-8.
Starter Alfredo Romero surrendered two runs on four hits over five innings. He walked two, hit one and struck out four.
Brayden Spears gave up three runs in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth to claim the loss. Spears’ final line was four run, but only one earned, on five hits over 2.2 innings. Spears did not walk anyone but he did hit one while striking out one.
Shortstop Angel Cepeda clubbed a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his eighth on the campaign. Cepeda had a big night with eight total bases, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and the home run. Cepeda had four runs batted in.
Right fielder Alexey Lumpuy hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, his 11th of the year. Lumpuy was 1 for 5.
Left fielder Jose Escobar went 3 for 4. He scored twice and drove in one.
