Josh Allen is now the Buffalo Bills’ all-time leader in touchdowns from scrimmage.
Allen scored his 88th career rushing or receiving touchdown on a one-yard run with a minute remaining in the second quarter against the New England Patriots on Sunday. The score tied the game, while moving Allen past Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas for the most touchdowns from scrimmage in franchise history.
Allen entered Sunday tied with Reed and Thomas at 87. He reached that mark last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, scoring twice on one-yard runs in Buffalo’s 24-16 win. His second touchdown came with 7:35 remaining and gave the Bills their first lead of the game.
Reed and Thomas had shared the franchise record since Reed scored his 87th and final touchdown for Buffalo in 1999.
Both are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and were key pieces of the Bills teams that reached four consecutive Super Bowls following the 1990 through 1993 seasons.
Reed spent 15 seasons in Buffalo, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and two second-team All-Pro honors. He finished his Bills career with 86 receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
Thomas played 12 seasons for the Bills, making five Pro Bowls and earning NFL MVP honors in 1991. His 87 touchdowns were divided between 65 rushing scores and 22 receiving touchdowns.
Allen’s path to the record has been considerably different from either of the those Buffalo legends. He entered Sunday’s game with 85 rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns, with his rushing total already the most by a quarterback in NFL history.
Sunday’s score gives Allen 86 rushing touchdowns to go with his two career touchdown receptions.
The other difference? The speed in which Allen has risen to the top of the franchise list. While it took both Reed and Thomas more than a decade to get to 87, Allen is just in the start of his ninth NFL year. Undoubtedly, he will set the bar very high for the next player attempting to rewrite Buffalo Bills history.
