As the World Cup of football (or soccer) plays out in the U.S., the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup is getting started in Istanbul, and Team USA’s first game is worth mentioning.
It was a smashing 115-84 win over France. And if you haven’t caught on, French basketball has improved immensely in the last 10-15 years and now has to be seen as a major international power in the sport. The days of importing a ringer like former Duke big man Crawford Palmer are long gone.
For Duke fans, the most interesting
part of this game was the performance of incoming Blue Devil Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje.
He played 21 minutes, had 12 points (5-8/2-3), and some overall smart play. There’s a really smart pass near the start of the video and one very powerful rebound as well.
Also on the team: Duke targets AJ Williams, who had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Beckham Black, who finished with 23 points and 4 assists.
