The Detroit Lions may officially have a hold-out on their hands.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was absent from the team’s first training camp practice on Wednesday. He was not listed on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football-Injury list to start camp, suggesting his absence is not injury related. Earlier this offseason, 97.1 The Ticket radio host Jon Jansen suggested a Gibbs absence could be coming because the star running back is seeking another contract.
”I have heard it from multiple
sources close to the team where I don’t think anybody would be surprised if he missed a couple of days,“ Jansen said.
Gibbs did report to training camp, as evidenced by a photo taken by the Lions’ official media team during player arrivals.
While this appears to be a sit-in from Gibbs, the good news is that it appears there has been progress with Gibbs’ contract situation. Earlier this week, Adam Schefter told Brad Galli that a deal could be done in the next week or so.
“I think the Gibbs thing could be relatively quick, whatever that is,” Schefter told Galli. “And, LaPorta, I haven’t heard as much on, but I think they’ll be moving in the running back market in the coming week plus.”
Gibbs is under contract for this season, and the Lions exercised his fifth-year option for 2027, as well. But it appears Gibbs wants to be locked up long-term and the Lions have already expressed a public interest in entering negotiations.
