Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Brentford for the £55million signing of Yoane Wissa, pretty much finishing a sublime summer of business in Tyneside.
The deal, confirmed by multiple outlets on Monday morning, is structured as £50m upfront with a further £5m in add-ons, alongside a 25 per cent sell-on clause.
Wissa has already travelled to Tyneside for a medical and will become the Magpies’ second major attacking addition in three days after Nick Woltemade’s record move from Stuttgart.
The 28-year-old’s arrival comes less than 24 hours after Alexander Isak’s £130m transfer to Liverpool was agreed, netting Newcastle a record-breaking fee in a historic Premier League sale that can only benefit NUFC.
Newcastle had insisted the Swede would only be sold if adequate reinforcements were secured, and with both Woltemade and Wissa now incoming, that condition has been met, and Liverpool fell into Newcastle’s trap, paying a humongous amount of money for the disgruntled, wantaway Isak. Hooray!
Wissa, mind you, had followed Isak’s steps by issuing a statement himself on Sunday, accusing Brentford of reneging on written assurances he could leave if a reasonable offer was received.
Brentford turned down Newcastle bids of £25m in July and £35m plus add-ons in August before finally accepting the £55m package. Wissa, who joined from Lorient for £8.5m in 2021, scored 19 Premier League goals last season and 49 across 149 appearances for the Bees.
Newcastle now has a versatile forward to complement Woltemade, while Isak will fight for playing time and scoring chances with Mo Salah and the likes.
