After being traded from the Royals to the Pirates on July 16 in exchange for Adam Frazier, Cam Devanney has finally made his major league debut after strong numbers over the last three years in Triple-A Indianapolis, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk. Devanney was called-up Friday when INF/OF Ronny Simon went on the 10-Day IL with a dislocated left shoulder.
This wasn’t Devanney’s first call to the show, as the Royals selected his contract on July 8 but never saw the field before being
traded to the Pirates, where he was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Devanney has hit .266/.493/.846 with 20 home runs and 66 RBI and a .353 OBP. He has displayed power throughout his minor league career and will have the opportunity to show what he can do at third base, which is a premium power position, as well as shortstop. Both positions are pretty open for 2026.
With Isiah Kiner-Falefa being claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays, it may be safe to assume that Devanney will get his opportunities for the rest of this season with the Pirates. As an older rookie at age 28, his dream became a reality today, but even better, he was a New Hampshire native playing in Fenway Park.
“I’ve been watching Red Sox games since I was 5 years old.” Devanney said. “Just really cool. I can’t think of a better way to hopefully kick off my career.”
Does Cam Devanney have a chance to be productive at the big league level and be a factor for the 2026 Pirates? Feel free to comment below.
