Newcastle United are set to return to the market for a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer, with a glaring lack of options at the position heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
The Magpies have been evaluating options for several months, if not years, following uncertainty around their current goalkeeping situation. Ultimately, NUFC stuck to the elder Nick Pope and the on-loan Aaron Ramsdale, but one will depart this summer, and the other is borderline playable.
With that, recruiting plans are in place
and will see the club focus on acquiring a long-term No 1 once and for all, with multiple targets under consideration across the Premier League and Europe.
Current Man City backup James Trafford has re-emerged as a leading candidate despite previous failed attempts to bring him to St James’ Park. Newcastle have tracked the 23-year-old closely over recent windows and continue to view him as a strong fit for their long-term plans.
The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope reported on Thursday that Newcastle will revisit their interest in Trafford this summer, with the goalkeeper now open to leaving the Cityzens in search of regular playing time.
According to Hope, Trafford is still seen internally as a goalie with the ideal profile for a Premier League goalkeeper, and a fee in the region of £35-40million is not expected to be prohibitive for the Magpies, let alone given the urgency for an incoming transfer on that front.
That said, Newcastle are continuing to monitor alternative options, including Bart Verbruggen, Robin Risser and Gregor Kobel, as they assess the market and could face potential competition for Trafford.
Meanwhile, Hope also reported that veteran goalie John Ruddy is set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
