Bob Stack had a tough run at Wake Forest, lasting just four seasons as the coach of the Demon Deacons, and finishing his run there at just 45-69.
Yet his teams were periodically fairly competitive, and for part of that time he had, without question, the most unusual player in ACC history: Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues.
Just 5-3, Bogues was a stunning athlete. He was blindingly quick, very low to the ground, and possibly the strongest player in the ACC at the time.
You may think that’s a joke, but it’s not.
When they were teammates with the Charlotte Hornets, former UNC star JR Reid, who most people would have thought was the most powerful player in the ACC, challenged Bogues to wrestle.
Bogues quickly had him upside down, his head inches off the floor. Reid is 6-9, weighed 25o, and was very powerful. Bogues made short work of him.
And Bogues was good enough to keep Wake Forest in a lot of games. Take this 1987 contest with Duke.
The Blue Devils started Danny Ferry, Billy King, John Smith, Kevin Strickland and Tommy Amaker.
Wake had four relatively random guys and Bogues.
And yet they took the Blue Devils to overtime, losing only when the last Wake Forest pass went wrong.
This video is fun just to watch Bogues as a young player. When Carl Tacy signed him, everyone thought he was nuts. Yet he went on to a long and brilliant NBA career.
