Bayern Munich got their 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign off to an absolutely flying start, beating RB Leipzig 6-0 at the Allianz Arena just a week after lifting the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup in Stuttgart. The reining Bundesliga champions hardly put a foot wrong all night and only allowed Die Roten Bullen to register one shot on target, though an incorrectly taken free kick did disallow Antonio Nusa’s goal for the visitors in the 71st minute.
Harry Kane bagged a hat-trick, Michael Olise netted a brace,
Serge Gnabry had two assists, and Luis Díaz had a goal and an assist for his Bundesliga debut. Vincent Kompany will not have too much to complain about after such a valiant display of power and certainly will enjoy the fact that they were also able to keep a clean sheet in the process.
There were early concerns not long into the first half when Leon Goretzka received some treatment for his ankle awkwardly getting caught in the pitch when he was attempting a clearance in Bayern’s box, but thankfully he was able to continue until he was eventually replaced by Aleksandar Pavlović in the 68th minute. Speaking after the match, the midfielder highlighted Bayern’s hunger and desire when they weren’t in possession as some of the keys to success on the night. They hardly gave Leipzig a moment to breathe when they were in possession and would win the ball back very quickly after losing it, much to the chagrin of a deflated-looking Ole Werner in front of Leipzig’s bench.
“It’s not that the opponent was bad today. We did very well. We showed a lot of hunger and desire off the ball and took our chances,” Goretzka explained (@iMiaSanMia). He was also asked about the knock he took to his ankle early on but said that he’s hopeful there was no sort of injury sustained and that it was just a painful occurrence. “It hurt but hopefully nothing bad,“ he stressed.
Hopefully for Kompany and Bayern, they’re able to keep up the hunger and desire off the ball that Goretzka spoke of. With the injuries they have to the squad, certain phases of the season will get difficult and Kompany will have to make rotations, making slight tweaks to the systems he puts forth. The club could still wind up making some loan signings before the summer transfer window closes on September 1st, but that’s up to Max Eberl, Christoph Freund, and the rest of the club’s front office.
Welcome to Bavarian Podcast Works — Edges and Underdogs, a BuLi Action Show!
This is not your run-of-the-mill gambling show as we are putting more focus on the ins-and-outs of the actual match day’s showdowns, rather than an odds-driven format (but yes, you will get the odds as well). This podcast is for people who watch the Bundesliga intently and who want to dive into some of the big games for each match day. Through that, we will also provide some information that could help those seeking to make a wager or two.
Each week, we will highlight three matches to talk through and break down who has the edge, who might be hurting, who is susceptible to being upset, who’s getting hot, and more! This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Edges and Underdogs, a BuLi Action Show:
- A breakdown of Bayern Munich vs. RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen vs, Hoffenheim, and FC St. Pauli vs. Borussia Dortmund.
- A look around the rest of the league’s matches.
