Newcastle United’s stance on Sandro Tonali has been tested for the past few weeks, with Tottenham Hotspur pushing to make the Italy international the centrepiece of Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield rebuild.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are preparing a fresh offer worth £100 million for Tonali after seeing an opening proposal rejected.
The first bid submitted by Spurs, quoted at around £75 million—well below Newcastle’s valuation—was promptly rejected. Now, however, the Magpies will be against
the ropes as they set precisely a £100 million valuation and, if their word is bond, should complete the sale of Tonali in the next few days.
“Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to step up their pursuit of Sandro Tonali with a sensational offer worth around £100million,” Bailey reported. “Manager Roberto De Zerbi looks to make the Newcastle United star the marquee signing of his midfield rebuild.”
TEAMtalk reported that Tottenham believe a bid in that region could be enough to reach an agreement, with Newcastle having consistently valued Tonali at that price.
The report also claimed Spurs have prepared a lucrative contract package worth more than double Tonali’s current Newcastle salary.
“The north London club have also put together a hugely lucrative contract package, worth more than double Tonali’s current salary at St James’ Park, in the belief they can persuade the 26-year-old to become the centre-piece of De Zerbi’s new-look midfield,” Bailey wrote.
According to a report from Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder, Tonali will earn £275,000 per week in London.
With Gordon gone and Tonali set to depart, it’s now time for Newcastle to make a third tough decision, this one involving Bruno and a likely sale to Arsenal that would remove three starters from Newcastle’s XI.
