According to Liverpool FC beat reporter Lewis Steele in his weekly Daily Mail column, sources in Madrid reckon that Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has already committed himself to a transfer to the
Reds, taking him off the table as a summer signing.
Of course, Real Madrid have just lost to Liverpool in the Champions League and each Real Madrid defeat is always accompanied by a flurry of transfer rumours, this time is no different, with various reports claiming Madrid have not given up on Ibrahima Konaté, or even them preferring Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano.
However, one of the local Liverpool journalists reporting this is quite significant, and it’s not a huge stretch of logic. Guehi had already said okay to a transfer to Liverpool, so obviously he’s been briefed about how Arne Slot plans to use him in his set up. Real Madrid can throw more money in the summer, but Steele reports that Liverpool are debating about whether to sign him in the January transfer window or in the summer, so that may not even come into play.
It’s also worth noting that Real Madrid don’t really throw copious amounts of money at free agents unless you’re a superstar level player like Kylian Mbappe, as Trent Alexander-Arnold reportedly took a £40k paycut to join Real Madrid. In the event that it comes down to a free transfer and Real Madrid open up the warchest, Liverpool FC could also be inclined to do so, since Guehi would be more much valuable to Liverpool due to the player’s homegrown status.
