Originally expected for 2026, FIFA has confirmed the first edition of the Women’s Club World Cup will take place in January 2028.
Due to stakeholders’ opinions about more time needed to get this tournament right, it was pushed to January 5-30, 2028. This means the 16-team tournament will take place in an Olympic year and in the middle of the European domestic league calendar. From an NWSL perspective, the tournament will take place in the off-season.
Questions arose about when is the best time to hold a tournament like this one, with many bringing to the table the FIFPro report from this year. That report highlights the tension between underloading and overloading players, acknowledging the injury risk that top players face when performing not only for their clubs but also for their national teams.
