The New England Patriots’ training camp is underway, and Sunday will see the team take the fields behind Gillette Stadium for the second practice of the summer. Once again, players will not be wearing any full pads, but there still projects to be a lot of action.
And so, with that said, let’s dive into Day 2.
Schedule
The Patriots’ second training camp practice of the summer will once again take place on the fields behind Gillette Stadium. As usual, it is free and open for the general public to attend.
- 9:15 a.m. ET: Gates open
- 10:30 a.m. ET: Practice
- ca. 12 p.m. ET: Player availability (RB TreVeyon Henderson, WR Mack Hollins, OT Will Campbell, DT Christian Barmore, ED Dre’Mont Jones, S Kevin Byard)
In addition
to practice, the Patriots will also hold a free bicycle giveaway at 12 p.m. ET.
As always, of course, the schedule is tentative and subject to change. For more information, please visit our Pats Pulpit Training Camp Guide.
Story of the day
The Patriots focused primarily on their run game installation on Saturday, so the question now becomes whether or not the passing game will be more heavily featured on Sunday. If so, the opportunities for the team’s receivers would naturally increase as well after A.J. Brown, for example, saw only one incomplete target on Day 1 (that was well-defended by cornerback Christian Gonzalez).
Naturally, an uptick in pass game activity would also mean more chances for the defensive backs to prove themselves.
Injuries to monitor
NFI: RB Terrell Jennings, S Brenden Schooler
PUP: TE C.J. Dippre, ED Harold Landry III
The Patriots are entering their second day of camp with the same four players on injury lists. All of them are able to return to practice as soon as they are medically cleared, which means that they could be back at practice as early as today (although at least in Landry’s case it sounds like that will not be the case).
Players to watch
WR Kyle Williams: The Patriots’ sophomore receiver had a quiet first training camp day, not seeing a single pass come his way in competitive team drills. It is too early to start panic about yet another highly-drafted wide receiver being quiet in practice, but a string of days like Saturday would definitely be concerning.
C Jared Wilson: New England’s new starting center and quarterback Drake Maye fumbled an exchange on Saturday, which in itself is nothing to worry about; that is what practice is for. However, that particular part of the operation being clean is a crucial part of the Patriots’ desires to up their offensive tempo and urgency this season.
ED Gabe Jacas: Will he be back, or won’t he be back? The Patriots’ second-round draft pick has reportedly agreed to terms on his rookie contract, but until he puts his signature under it will not be obligated to appear at practice. That could happen as early as Sunday because it’s the sooner, the better for a New England edge that is already missing the aforementioned Harold Landry.
S Mike Brown: Perhaps surprisingly, Brown saw significant action as a third safety on Day 1. He was not perfect — DeMario Douglas beat him for a catch at one point — but his usage over third-year man Dell Pettus was definitely notable. Something to keep an eye on.
