It’s never a quiet day around Baton Rouge and LSU, and that has proven to be the case today. NFL TE Dae’Quan Wright, who played for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, has officially committed to LSU after being cut by the Cleveland Browns.
Yes, you read that correctly. That one sentence has so many different layers to it.
First, Lane Kiffin and LSU have just become the first college team to receive a commitment from a former NFL player for the upcoming season. Second, a player who was deemed ineligible a month
ago has now been able to find a path to regain his eligibility. If Wright clears waivers, he could be in Baton Rouge in time to prepare for LSU’s Week 1 kickoff against Clemson.
Yes, LSU is waiting for a player to clear NFL waivers before it can work through another hurdle to get him on campus.
The final step would be for the SEC’s intraconference transfer rule not to be enforced. The SEC does not allow players to transfer within the conference outside of the initial transfer portal period, which took place at the beginning of the year. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey made a statement last week reminding conference members that those rules remain in effect.
Sankey is quoted by ESPN as saying, “In addition, SEC eligibility rules, including those relating to intraconference transfers, remain in effect until fully or individually waived, or the rule is changed.”
The addition of Wright would be a phenomenal pickup for the Tigers. LSU would be adding a 6’4”, 246-pound veteran tight end who recorded 39 receptions for 635 yards and five touchdowns in a system operated by Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr., who are now no longer at the school Wright would be transferring from.
This is a big move. LSU gets a tight end who was working through the NFL preseason process and adds a player from a rival at a position of need.
While there are still some hurdles left to clear, Wright has made his intentions known that he would like to be in Baton Rouge. Even his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has informed Adam Schefter that an agreement between LSU and Wright is already in place.
