Penn State football’s Ty Howle is reportedly following James Franklin to Virginia Tech and receiving a big promotion in return.
Howle, who has served as the Nittany Lions’ tight ends coach since 2021 and co-offensive coordinator since 2023, will now be the Hokies’ offensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He is also expected to be the offensive play caller.
Howle was an offensive lineman at Penn State from 2009 to 2013 and later joined his alma mater as an analyst in 2020. He was promoted to tight ends coach in 2021 when Tyler Bowen left the program for a job in the NFL.
The biggest feather in Bowen’s cap was his role in the development of Tyler Warren, who won the Mackey Award in 2024 following a historic season. Bowen also worked with future NFL players Brenton Strange and Theo Johnson during his time in Happy Valley.
Howle is the first position coach to follow Franklin to Blacksburg, but plenty of behind-the-scenes folks like Andy Frank and Kevin Threlkel have already made similar moves.
