In the NFL, if you are covering today’s news without quickly pivoting to what it means for tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year, you are way behind. The Cleveland Browns have officially traded DE Myles Garrett in exchange for DE Jared Verse and multiple draft picks. Looking ahead, the Browns have 11 selections in the 2027 NFL draft and could add QB Arch Manning and a lot more talent to their young base.
The other piece of looking ahead is what other moves GM Andrew Berry could make. That
includes CB Denzel Ward, whose contract was adjusted this offseason but not to the full extent, which leaves him available to be traded from a salary cap perspective.
As of now, Ward is set to cost just over $30 million against the Browns salary cap, but the team can save over $17 million if they trade him away. A deal for Ward could bring back a young cornerback and a Day 2 draft pick, but, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Ward will not be traded, nor will Berry oversee a sell-off of players:
Don’t sense this is a fire sale. Was told a hard no on Denzel Ward’s availability, for example.
Then again, Berry and many media reports denied that Garrett would be traded before Monday’s news.
Like Garrett, Ward has not been present for any team activities but noted that he will be in attendance for mandatory camp while joking that his girlfriend took up his offseason time.
Do you think the Browns should look to trade Ward? Do you think Fowler’s report is posturing, or do you think the former Buckeyes star corner will be in Cleveland all of next season?
