After an exciting victory over Arkansas on Saturday, Michigan State Men’s Basketball returns to the Breslin Center tonight for a 6:30 PM tipoff against the San Jose State Spartans. The game will be televised
on the Big Ten Network.
SJSU, of the Mountain West Conference, is coming off a 15-20 season and enters this game at 0-2 with road losses to Utah (84-75) and UC Santa Barbara (85-74).
Former Nebraska coach Tim Miles is now in his fifth season at San Jose State. The Spartans went 21-14 under Miles in 2022-23 but have been under .500 otherwise during his tenure.
Junior guard Colby Garland (#0) leads San Jose State through two games with 25.5 points per game while making 67% of his field goal attempts. JaVaughn Hannah (#2) and Ben Roseborough (#11) are also in double figures averaging 12 and 10 points per game, respectively.
SJSU doesn’t appear to have a lot of size. It looks like their biggest player to see significant time through two games is 6’-10”, 220 lb. senior forward Sadraque NgaNga (#99). The other guys who have played are in the 6’-2” to 6’-6” range and Garland is only 6’-0”. So, MSU should have a nice size advantage.
San Jose State has shot it pretty well through their first two games in hitting nearly 49% of their field goal attempts but the other Spartans have only made 30% of their three pointers. They held their own on the boards against Utah and UCSB but should really have their work cut out for them against MSU. Finally, SJSU isn’t particularly prone to turnovers in committing 25 through two games or creating them (11 per game so far).
