Myles Garrett has not played for the Los Angeles Rams since Week 1 and the team still is not sure if the edge rusher will return to the field any time soon. Sean McVay was asked about Garrett returning for the Los Angeles Chargers game on Sunday, and the head coach said that he wasn’t sure if L.A.‘s superstar offseason acquisition would practice this week or not.
McVay said needs to meet with Reggie Scott, the Rams’ Senior Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance, before he makes any type
of determination.
McVay was asked about both Garrett and tight end Terrance Ferguson potentially making a return to practice this week, but answered that he wasn’t prepared to answer yet.
“I’m not sure yet. I’m not decided on those things.”
A follow-up question was asked with regard to when McVay would know whether or not either player would practice this week. McVay only offers further that he’ll meet with the medical team and go from there. McVay doesn’t offer any insight to how he thinks that meeting will go, just that he needs to meet with them before making a decision.
“Once I get with Reggie and talk about the approach for the week. Then we’ll just kinda follow their guidance based on where he’s at and how he’s feeling.”
It could be gamesmanship, it could be McVay wanted to have genuine deniability for this presser about whether Garrett will play this week or not, but at some point the team will need to make a decision on Garrett. And hopefully soon because the team invested a lot into him as an addition for a defense that is lacking serious firepower upfront this season.
The Rams traded a first-round pick, Jared Verse, and more to to get Garrett. He hasn’t played in a game since Week 1, as the 2025 sack leader has yet to notch one single sack or tackle for his new team.
The longer Garrett doesn’t suit up, the harder it will be for the Rams to stay afloat in a tough 2026 season where the Rams need to go on a run to make Garrett’s return worth it from a playoff perspective. By the time Garrett is ready, if he’s ready, will there be a point to playing this season? Or, will it better to wait for 2027?
As McVay might say, “I’m not sure yet. I’m not decided on those things.”
